Previous linguistic knowledge in the process of third language (L3) acquisition and use

In this talk we will address the phenomenon of crosslinguistic influence (CLI) in the context of third language acquisition. The phenomenon itself is rather complex and it takes into consideration that all previous linguistic knowledge, and not just knowledge of a native language (L1), can affect the process of acquisition and production in a third language (L3).
We will present a study which takes a psycholinguistic perspective on multilingual production in which the Dynamic Model of Multilingualism (Herdina & Jessner, 2002), is taken as a metaphor in an attempt to look at third language production from a holistic perspective. More specifically, we are looking at the influence of background linguistic (both native and non-native) knowledge in the English production of multilingual learners. Main tendencies and patterns, as well as variability in L3 production, will be discussed in terms of the role previous language systems assumed in L3 production.
